Head Massage for Healthy Hair and Relaxation: Step-by-Step Procedure, Benefits and Safety Tips

Two basic requirements for a healthy scalp are cleanliness and stimulation. It is based on the ancient medical system of Ayurveda. 

Head massage is excellent for relieving stress and tension from daily life as well as for healthy hair. Head massage is most effective for normal scalps when performed once a week in a consistent manner.

Before beginning a massage, the therapist needs to obtain relevant details from the client. The therapist should be professional in their manner and make the client feel welcome.

Personal details should be taken and recorded on a record card. These should include medical history, any contraindications that may exist. If in doubt, an approval letter from the client's doctor should be obtained first.


Different Massage Movements

These are several massage movements that are chosen according to the desired effect. Each massage movement positions the hand under the hair so that the length of the fingers, the tips of the fingers, and the cushions of the palms stimulate the muscles, nerves, and blood vessels of the scalp area.


Stroking

Stroking movements during massage have a calming and relaxing effect on the skin. They are performed with the entire palm. Patting always begins and ends a massage routine.


Petrissage

Petrissage is the technical name for kneading movements. This rolling and gentle squeezing of the muscles beneath the skin increases blood and lymph circulation and stimulates the muscles for a toning effect.


Friction

Friction is a circular, deep rubbing motion. Friction greatly increases circulation and is commonly used on the scalp, arms, and hands. Friction is used to manipulate the scalp without applying pressure.


Tapotement

Tapotement is a movement that involves tapping or lightly slapping the skin. It is done rhythmically and gently with the pads of the fingers or the sides of the palms. It increases blood circulation.

Procedure for Head Massage

The following are the step by step procedure for head massage:

1.Find a quiet place away from any distractions. Make sure the room is at a comfortable temperature. Light some candles and play some soft music to prepare the room.

2.Ask the recipient to sit and relax. Tell them to tell you about any discomfort or pain. Stand behind them, placing your hands lightly on their shoulders as you take several deep breaths.

3.Massage the shoulders. Begin to relieve fatigue and tension by massaging the upper back, shoulders, arms, and neck. Gently squeeze the trapezius muscle (at the base of the neck), starting near the neck. Work your way outward to the shoulders. Repeat this three times, increasing the pressure with each pass.

4.Work toward the spine and move your hands back up the sides of the neck, extending your thumbs, and with your thumbs, make small circles on either side of the spine just below the collar line. 

5.Massage the upper part of the shoulders. Place your forearms on the sides of the neck and rotate them outward toward the shoulders, rotating at the wrists. After rotating, lift your forearms and move them two inches away from the neck and repeat. When you reach the shoulders, return to the center and repeat this process two more times.

6.Continue working in circles from the base of the skull to the back of the neck until you reach the hairline. Lower your hands back down and repeat two more times. 

7.Give a neck massage. Step to one side of your volunteer, place one hand at the base of the recipient's neck, and your front hand gently on their forehead to prevent their head from falling forward. Open your thumb with your back hand and slide your hand up the back of the neck. Don't apply pressure directly to the vertebrae. 

8.Once you reach the new hairline, stay there for a moment, applying gentle pressure to the back of the head. Move your back hand down and repeat from the base of the neck. You can also add a few circles to the upward strokes if it feels like there's too much tension. Repeat this about five times. When your back hand finally reaches the hairline, let it rest there.

9.Slowly allow your hand to tilt forward without applying any pressure or effort. Place your hand on the recipient's hairline. 

10.Move your hand back. Gently lift the head back up and continue backward, again without forcing it, simply allowing the head to move within its range of motion. Repeat this back and forth three times. 

11.The recipient and their hair are loosened. Lift your hands, fingers extended to the sides of the hands, fingers pointing upward. Use light pressure and slowly move your hands upward while shampooing, trying to keep the heels of your hands in contact with the scalp as well as the fingers.

12.Rub the scalp: Bring one hand to the volunteer's forehead for stability while you keep the heel of the other hand in contact with the back of the head. Begin rubbing the scalp by moving your back hand vigorously back and forth. Rub the scalp as thoroughly as possible, then switch hands and repeat on the other side.

13.Gently rub the scalp thoroughly with the fingers of both hands. Continue this for about a minute.

14.Stroke your finger through your recipient's hair from the top of the forehand bank.  For the final stroke, tilt their head back slightly, then place your fingers on the forehead and drag your fingers down and along the brow line to each temple, making small circles above the temple. Repeat this process three times.

15.A rubber scalp massager can be used for head massage. It features a handle and small, protruding circular pads tipped with rubber nubs. Using a rubber scalp massager allows you to massage the scalp without damaging sensitive tissues or straining yourself.

16.Begin with smooth strokes starting at the forehead, gradually working your way to the back of the head. Continue this for about a minute, easing the pressure towards the end until your hands are gliding smoothly.

Precautions

Cream ointments can be applied before using high-frequency current. Hair tonics or lotions containing alcoholic ingredients can only be applied after high-frequency current has been applied.
